Do you remember the musical/drama called SARAFINA which was released in 1992? Listen, I was nine (9) years old when I saw this movie on VHS. Yes, you read that right! My Uncle from the United States sent us the VHS Tape in 1994.

Listen to me, after watching this video I ran around the yard singing “ Freedom is coming….” And “ Yoh! Siyelele Mama, u helele…”. This was not without the shouting of, “Amandla!” and responding with “Awethu”, bussing all the dance moves and singing, well at least in my mind what I thought were the steps and lyrics lol. Clearly, this little Trinbagonian girl thought she was in Soweto.
I remembered asking my mom why she didn’t name me Sarafina. The message of freedom, hope, pressing forward, Africa love stayed with me from that early age. I have grown, loving African clothing and jewellery. For special occasions growing up, I needed to go to the only known store at that time in East Trinidad to get a new wax print outfit with matching headwrap. As I said before, the love of African culture and clothing is not a now thing !
So how did Sarafina Fashion Collections come about? After completing my MBA, I decided I wanted to become an entrepreneur. So, what should I retail? I wanted to sell something that I love and would enjoy selling. I knew whatever I decided to sell, the business would be named Sarafina. I wanted authentic items from Africa, and as such, a search was done on Instagram and a Supplier was sourced from Kenya. In June 2019 on bare faith, the first order was placed, money was sent and the rest is history.
None of the known african clothing stores in Trinidad and Tobago, were offering trendy and unique african jewelry and accessories, so I decided to start there, and although I wasn’t too certan of the market, I decided to launch out and fill this void for myself and others. As the business grows, we seek to expand into African inspired stylish, contemporary clothing for the whole family .
